The Rich Young Ruler
Mark 10:17-22 2006 11 09
As He started on His way, a man ran up, kneeled down in front of Him and asked, “Good Rabbi, what should I do to obtain eternal life?” Yeshua said to him, “Why are you calling Me Good? No one is good except God! You know the commandments-don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t give false testimony, don’t defraud, honor your father and mother…” “Rabbi,” he said, “I have kept all these since I was a boy,”
Yeshua, looking at him, felt love for him, and said to him, “You are missing one thing, Go, Sell whatever you own, give to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come, take up the cross, and follow Me!” Shocked by this word, he went away sad; because he was a wealthy man.
How many times I have looked at this story.
‘…Go sell whatever you own…
Not just give an offering to the poor, but go sell whatever you own and give to the poor.
Riches in heaven? What are these riches in heaven?
Follow You? You and your guys are gleaning the fields for food, do I have to live like that to obtain eternal life?
What is this eternal life, anyway?
Nope, I don’t think so, I’m going back home now. Back to my nice warm palace, where I never have to worry about being hungry or not having nice clothes to wear. That’s just a little bit too much to ask of a person, to sell whatever they have, and then to give it all away…and to those poor people who have no idea what to do with money…and they really don’t care, they are satisfied with the way that they live, they’re just lazy, why should I support them? Then that leaves me no better than a bum myself, having to beg for food…
I don’t know, at first I really thought that you were who you said you were, but I don’t think the kingdom of God is made up of a bunch of paupers.
And take up what cross? Follow You where, where are You going?’
Sell it all
Give it away
Take up the cross
Follow Him
There are no further instructions
His Word is Final
His Way Is the Only Way
He sets before you Life and Death
